Few things are worse than a file you can’t open. Even though I’m no longer in Korea, I still come across the occasional HWP that needs to be opened or worked with.

(For anyone coming across this post and wondering ‘what’s an HWP?’, it’s a file format for the Hangul Word Processing program. It’s a Microsoft Word-like program that’s extremely common in South Korea, and it’s used everywhere from governments to schools to businesses. While this program is installed on almost every South Korean computer, non-Koreans tend not to have this country-specific program.)

Which one fits you best?

If you’d rather open it online, head to ThinkFree and their online office suite. While the editing part is restricted to account holders (registration is free, or sign in with your Google Account), viewing simply requires you to upload the document and click ‘View Document’. Copy and paste the data wherever you like.

Get a document converter from Microsoft – click here to download directly from Microsoft. This’ll let you convert and open an HWP file with Microsoft Word – be sure to get the correct version for your system (32-bit or 64-bit).

For Android devices, Hancom office Hanword Viewer is a free program. It’s optimized for “Galaxy S, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Tab10.1, Motorola Xoom, Nexus One, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, HTC Desire HD, LG Optimus Q, Vega LTE, Vega No.5. Note the app only lets you view files, not save or edit them. Requires Android 2.1 and up.

For Windows, pick up a trial of the Hancom Office Suite. The 2014 version has a 30-day trial, so go to http://www.hancom.com/en/product/product2014_01.jsp. If you’d rather have a 60-day trial of the 2010 version, head to http://www.hancom.com/en/product/product2010.jsp. Install it like any other program.

For Android devices, the Hancom Office Suite is available. At around $25 USD, it’s not the cheapest thing around.

On a Mac, do it on the ThinkFree online office suite (free registration required, or sign in with your Google Account). It won’t run on Chrome (Java 7 doesn’t work with 32-bit browsers), so use Firefox or Safari instead.

On iOS devices, the Hancom Office for iOS is your best option. It’s $19.99 (US), but opens and converts Word documents to HWP format without problem.

Windows business applications including Office 365 can be accessed from PCs/Macs/Android/iOS/Linux devices with Cloud Desktops and Office 365 with full support from O365CloudExperts .
